Defender deal close
Newcastle are leading the race to sign FC Twente defender Douglas after it was revealed the player will leave Holland in the summer.
Magpies boss Alan Pardew has made finding a new central defender one of his top priorities ahead of next season and the highly-rated Douglas is known to be high on his wanted list. Twente have already lined up the 24-year-old's replacement in a clear indication they are happy to sell and Newcastle will fight off interest from Aston Villa and Fulham to secure a deal. Douglas has told Twente boss Steve McClaren he wants to leave and the former England boss will not stand in his way if Newcastle make an approach. "It's not a case of if Douglas wants to play in the Premier League - it's simply when. He's told the manager he wants to go," A source at FC Twente told the Chronicle. "Steve McClaren also has a new defender lined up to replace him in the summer and appreciates that Douglas wants to move on."
