Enrique sets European goal
Newcastle United, 18:18, July 14, 2010 ,
Jose Enrique believes Newcastle need to get back into Europe as soon as possible but admits they probably won't make it this season.
The Toon were promoted back to the Premier League from the Championship in May after just one season outside the top flight.
As with all promoted clubs the number one ambition for manager Chris Hughton and his team will be survival and consolidation, rather than aiming for the top of the league.
However, with Newcastle previously having come within inches of winning the Premier League their fans are bound to have set their sights high.
Enrique admits that for a club as big as Newcastle, European football is essential if they are to bring them back to the level they were at in the mid-90s.
However, the Spanish defender says he is realistic about this season and believes their main focus should be on survival rather than anything else.
"I think we need to be realistic," EnrĂque told the Journal.
"We played in the Championship last year and won it. I think we have a good squad, but we cannot get too carried away.
"We have not signed too many players yet and the Premier League is a very difficult league. We need to be a little bit quiet. We will see what happens.
"We need to see what the division is like but, whatever else happens, the most important thing is that we are still a Premier League team at the end of next season."
Newcastle begin their season with a tough trip to Manchester United but optimistic Newcastle fans might fancy using Betfair's free bet to back their side to come away with a surprise win.
