Newcastle have failed with a £4million bid for Lille defender Matthieu Debuchy, while no offer has gone in for Luuk De Jong.
The Magpies are keen to land Debuchy, who is away with France at Euro 2012, but they have been told to double their offer if they are to have a chance of completing a deal.
Lille have admitted the full back could leave this summer but say he is going nowhere for £4million.
"I do believe that Newcastle have faxed an offer of £4m - but they must have the wrong player," Lille coach Rudi Garcia said.
"He is torn between staying with us and playing in the Champions League in our new stadium or going elsewhere. If he does go and it is a sporting progression, then we will be happy to see him evolve - but we have not planned to replace him."
Meanwhile sources close to Newcastle say no offer has gone in for De Jong despite reports today that boss Alan Pardew has launched an £8million bid for the Dutchman.
The FC Twente striker is a target but Pardew has yet to make a bid.
