Obafemi Martins has been ruled out for six weeks because of groin surgery which could leave him in limbo at St James' Park.
The Nigeria international was troubled by the problem towards the end of last season and is now touch-and-go to be fit for pre-season.
Martins' lay-off would also put potential suitors off making a swoop which means he might be forced to start the new season in the Championship with the Magpies.
