City in talks with 'number one' target
Norwich City, 18:06, August 17, 2009 ,
Norwich have confirmed they are in talks with an unnamed manager at another English club, who is their "number one" target.
The Canaries chief executive David McNally says City have been given permission by the mystery man's club to speak to him as they step up their search for a replacement for Bryan Gunn, who was sacked on Friday.
"The process has started," McNally said. "We have a shortlist of people that we're interested in.
"I would also add that many, many people have applied for the position, but this is a head-hunting exercise rather than us interviewing people who have applied for the role.
"We have identified in order who we would like to see and we've focused on our number one target.
"I've met with him and we are in talks. Unfortunately, at this stage, I can't confirm when he will be at the football club but I am confident that at some point as soon as possible we should be able to make a positive announcement.
"He is currently in employment at another football club."
Several managers, including Adrian Boothroyd, Gordon Strachan and Lawrie Sanchez, have all been linked with the vacant post but McNally's comments suggest those three are now out of the running.
Scunthorpe boss Nigel Adkins was also thought to be in the frame but the Iron insist they have had no contact from the Canaries.
