Norwich are close to signing Tottenham's central defender Sebastien Bassong after the player agreed on a move to Carrow Road.

The 26-year-old Cameroon international was out of favour at White Hart Lane under former boss Harry Redknapp last season and spent the second half of the campaign on loan at relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers. Bassong, who joined Spurs from Newcastle in an £8million deal in summer 2009, does not appear to be in the plans of current Spurs chief Andre Villas-Boas, who it looks like has given him the green light to depart. Canaries boss Chris Hughton, who worked with Bassong during his time at Newcastle, has drafted in Michael Turner from Sunderland to bolster his central defence this summer. But, following a 5-0 opening day mauling at Fulham, Hughton clearly feels that his backline needs more strength in depth which has prompted a move to take Bassong to East Anglia.
