Cleverly too smart for Fry
Nathan Cleverly defended his British and Commonwealth light-heavyweight titles when he knocked out Courtney Fry in the eighth round.
The 22-year-old Welshman was favourite going into the bout against his 34-year-old opponent at London's York Hall. And, after being frustrated by the 1998 Commonwealth Games champion in the early rounds, Cleverly finally caught Fry and pinned him to the ropes with a flurry of blows in the eighth.
The referee stepped in to stop the fight and Cleverly, who was well ahead on points at the time, made it 18 fights unbeaten and he has now stopped his last five opponents. It was a third professional defeat for Fry, who came up short in terms of punching power.
