The New Jersey Devils booked their place in the Stanley Cup Finals with a 3-2 overtime victory over New York Rangers on Friday night.
The Devils missed out on the play-offs altogether last season for the first time but have bounced back brilliantly this season, culminating in their appearance in the Finals.
The Devils had home advantage for Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals series against arch rivals, the New York Rangers, and they looked to have made it count with goals from Ryan Carter and Ilya Kovalchuk giving them a 2-0 first period lead.
However, the Rangers hit back through Ruslan Fedotenko and Ryan Callahan drawing the scored level with neither side able to break the deadlock in regulation time.
That forced the extra periods and it took just 63 seconds for the Devils to book their passage, despite early Ranger dominance, when Adam Henrique scored after a scramble in which Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist twice denied Kovalchuk as well as Alexei Ponikarovsky.
The Devils have now advanced to their first finals since 2003, when they last lifted the cup, and they will take on Western Conference champions, the Los Angeles Kings, with Game 1 taking place on Wednesday night.
