Ferguson eyes Thompson deal

Peterborough United, 12:27, July 1, 2009 ,

Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson has confirmed the club have made an improved offer for Stockport defender Josh Thompson.

The 17-year-old centre-half is highly regarded at Edgeley Park but Stockport County, who are currently in administration, may be forced into a sale because of their massive financial difficulties.
West Brom and Manchester United have also been credited with an interest in the youngster but Ferguson is confident he can secure a deal for Thompson.
"We've put another bid in and hopefully it's good enough," Ferguson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. "West Brom and Manchester United are reportedly in for him, but we're trying our best to complete a deal.
"He comes from a good background, wants to improve as a player, and we've had some good reports about him,
"He's one of the best young centre-backs around and he's got good height, which we'll need next season."
Ferguson confirmed Posh had a deal in place to bring in an unnamed Premier League defender on a season long loan deal but he will only go through with it if he fails in his pursuit of Thompson.
He added: "There is a centre-half we can get on loan, but I'd rather do a permanent deal, so it's on hold until we know more with Josh Thompson."
