Tony Adams has jumped to the defence of under fire keeper David James whose mistake handed Wolfsburg the winner on Thursday night.
The Pompey boss instead blamed defensive lapses from his side for their exit from the competition rather than concentrate on the England keeper's error.
"We made too many mistakes to win the game," said Adams, who saw his side exit the Uefa Cup following the loss.
"James has saved a penalty, set up the first goal - he's a great keeper and I have every faith in him."
Defeat in Germany ends Pompey's first sojourn into Europe but with Braga winning in Heerenveen they would have gone out whatever the result in Germany. And Adams will be looking for a response from the side when they face struggling West Brom in the Premiership on Sunday.
