Wilson progress hailed by coach

Portsmouth, 09:57, March 4, 2010 ,

First-team coach Paul Groves claims Portsmouth's Marc Wilson has made 'fantastic progress' and feels he will go far with Ireland.

The 22-year-old, who has become a first-team regular at Fratton Park this season, was rewarded for his club form with a call-up to Republic of Ireland coach Giovanni Trappatoni's squad for Tuesday's 2-0 friendly defeat against Brazil at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.
Wilson was an unused substitute throughout, but Groves is certain that he will enjoy a long career in the game for club and country.
Groves told the News: "I'm delighted for Marc at his call-up. I think he's made fantastic progress.
"This season, it has been a very successful and very quick rise for Marc. He has taken it in his stride and I'm delighted for him because he has done very well for himself.
"I think he's got a great work ethic, he's got two good feet, he's decent in the air, he reads the game reasonably well and he's quite aggressive at times.
"He's got a number of attributes so who knows how far he can push on?
"He's got a good temperament, but he's comfortable with the ball, he is composed and he's got a good range of passing.
"Sure, Marc has made mistakes, but I think he has learned from those as well."
