Brown joy as North End win at last
Preston North End,
Manager Phil Brown hopes his Preston side have turned the corner after they ended a miserable run of results with a 1-0 victory at Hartlepool.
A goal from striker Neil Mellor proved decisive at Victoria Park and was enough for Brown's side to win for the first time in 10 league outings. The striker latched onto a loose ball and instinctively drilled in from distance after 25 minutes.
Last season Mellor bagged a hat-trick for Sheffield Wednesday at Victoria Park and heaped more misery on the hosts as they suffered a club-record seventh successive home defeat in all competitions.
"It's been a long time coming," said Brown. "We are all delighted because we have been suffering a tough run.
"Again it could have been comfortable. At one-nil we have chances to see it off and the conditions weren't great for us.
"The back four stood up in the swirling wind and it was a difficult night for defenders who stood up to their tasks individually. You could go through the team and praise them and I'm delighted with Neil Mellor for his goal as well."
