Thomson switch ditched

Rangers, 19:51, November 12, 2008 ,

West Bromwich Albion have put their attempts to land Rangers midfielder Kevin Thomson on hold after he was ruled out for the season.

The Baggies boss Tony Mowbray was reported to be lining up a bid for the player until the news broke that he will be out for the rest of the campaign with cruciate knee ligament damage.
Thomson now faces surgery and eight months on the sidelines and Albion will have to look elsewhere.
Meanwhile, boss Walter Smith has offered him encouragement and has told the player he has the makings of a future Rangers captain.
"I really like him as a player," said Smith. "He now has a reasonable level of experience to start imposing himself on games. That part was starting to come and he's got a hardness about him which is always essential in that midfield area.
"I've told Kevin often that he has to realise that he's got that capability to control things in every game. In time I think leadership and captaincy will be something that come to him."
