Coleman hails Dale's determination

John Coleman praised Rochdale's determination after his side won a penalty shootout to edge past Fleetwood.

Dale's passage through to the second round looked in doubt midway through the second half when Fleetwood skipper Jamie McGuire scored twice in quick succession to erase a two-goal lead and send the game to penalties. But Dale goalkeeper Ben Smith was the hero in the shootout with two saves to send Rochdale through. Coleman was disappointed to let the lead slip but was delighted with his side's battling qualities. "We conceded two goals when the same man hasn't been picked up twice, so that was disappointing, and it was a worry that they had a couple of chances in the first half from set-plays," said Coleman. "But give the lads their due, they kept going and had a couple of chances to win it and then we kept our nerve in the shootout."
