Crusaders put to sword by Saints
Rugby League, 09:44, June 27, 2009 ,
St Helens stuffed basement club Celtic Crusaders 30-0 on Friday to tighten their grip on Super League top spot.
This one-sided affair was over as a contest at half-time because of four tries from Lee Gilmour, Paul Wellens, Tony Puleta and Matt Gidley, orchestrated by the impressive Leon Pryce.
The Crusaders did a manful containing job after the restart but eventually caved in again when Chris Dean crossed the line for the home side on 74 minutes.
The win sees Saints hold a four-point advantage over nearest challengers Leeds Rhinos, who edged a thrilling West Yorkshire derby over Bradford Bulls 33-20.
St Helens coach Mick Potter: "It wasn't the best of spectacles. They didn't get any tries and they probably weren't looking for them in the second half.
"I think they were just looking to get through the game. We wanted two points and it was great to keep Celtic to zero."
