Leeds Rhinos boss Brian McDermott described confirmation Danny McGuire will miss the Challenge Cup final as "the worst possible news".
England international McGuire limped out of the Rhinos' 68-24 Super League win against Widnes at the weekend because of a knee injury and will now face eight weeks on the sidelines.
It means the 29-year-old will miss the club's Wembley showdown on August 25 against former boss Tony Smith and his Grand Final chasing Warrington Wolves side.
McDermott said: "We are absolutely devastated for Danny that he will miss out on Wembley."
He added: "This is the worst possible news that we could have received so close to the final and clearly we will have to have a major rethink about our tactics."
McGuire is the joint top try-scorer in Super League history with 199, level with former Leeds team-mate Keith Senior, but has never won the Challenge Cup.
