Two-try Smith signs off in style

Rugby League, 11:14, October 11, 2009 ,

Lee Smith said it was "unreal" to score two tries and win the Grand Final with Leeds before switching codes to rugby union.

The Rhinos winger bagged a brace as Leeds beat St Helens 18-10 at Old Trafford to secure a hat-trick of Grand Final wins over Saints.
St Helens were first on the scoreboard as Kyle Eastmond took advantage of a favourable bounce to touch down.
His conversion and subsequent penalty gave Saints an 8-0 lead but Leeds came roaring back with scores from Matt Diskin and Smith to ensure the sides were all square at the break.
Kevin Sinfield dropped a goal to give the Yorkshire outfit a slender advantage before Eastmond landed another two-pointer to give his side a one-point lead.
Sinfield edged Leeds ahead with a penalty before Smith scored the decisive try on 72 minutes to give the Rhinos some breathing space.
However, the try will be debated for some time as it appeared that Smith may have been off-side when Danny McGuire kicked through.
The video referee awarded the score and Rob Burrow rounded off the scoring with a drop-goal.
Smith is set to join the 15-man code with a switch to Wasps and he felt it was a fitting way to end his time with the Rhinos and the game of rugby league.
"This is a great set of lads - I've met some awesome people here," he said. "I've made my decision. It's something I had to do. I couldn't have wished for a better time at Leeds.
"It is unreal. It's my last game, and I didn't want it to end in anything other than this. I'll settle for a win - it doesn't matter who scores the tries."
