Shaun Wane has assured Wigan Warriors fans he will be doing his utmost to keep Brett Finch at the DW Stadium.
The Australian half-back scored a decisive second-half try in a man-of-the-match performance against bitter rivals St Helens to secure Wigan an 18-4 win and place in the Challenge Cup semi-finals against Leeds Rhinos in a repeat of last year's final.
The former Melbourne Storm favourite is coming to the end of his two-year stay with the Super League table-toppers but Wane said he would fight to keep hold of him.
He told BBC Radio Manchester: "Brett is a good player and he's been consistently really good for us.
"If we can keep him next year, that would be superb."
Wigan take on second-placed Huddersfield Giants in a top-of-the-table Super League clash at the Galpharm Stadium on Friday evening and Wane said he hoped Finch would play a key part in the club's future.
He added: "We've got half of the season left, we've got some big games coming up and, whatever happens next year, I can deal with next year."
