Achilles injury ends Vainikolo's season

Rugby Union, 09:35, January 7, 2009

Tongan powerhouse Lesley Vainikolo will miss the rest of the season because of a serious Achilles injury, Gloucester have confirmed.

The 29-year-old England winger faces at least seven months on the sidelines following an operation on the problem he picked up against Saracens on Saturday.

Gloucester boss Dean Ryan said: "Les is a massive part of our squad, not just for his on-field contributions but because his personality is such an integral part of the group.

"It will leave a very significant gap. With the injuries we have at the moment, this could not have come at a worse time.

"When it is appropriate he will begin his rehab process but we appreciate it will be a long road and he will have all the support he needs."

Vainikolo is due to appear at Bristol Crown Court next week after being charged with GBH and could go to prison if found guilty of the alleged offence in Bath last October.
