England have been handed a fresh injury blow ahead of the summer tour to South Africa after Courtney Lawes was ruled out.
The 23-year-old Northampton Saints lock, who has been capped 14 times by England, has suffered a shin problem and is the latest player to become unavailable for England coach Stuart Lancaster following on from back-row duo Tom Wood and Tom Croft.
Saints director of rugby Jim Mallinder confirmed that Lawes would not feature for England in the tour, while he is also out of his club side's Premiership play-off bid.
Mallinder told BBC Northampton: "He's gutted. You want to be involved in the big games. He'll probably not play for Saints or for England."
He added: "He's been a bit unfortunate [but] he'll come back fighting fit. He's got a lot of years to go.
"We were hoping that he might play some part this season, but it looks like he's not recovered enough from his shin injury."
