Hayes happy with new role

Scunthorpe United, 14:56, September 24, 2009 ,

Striker Paul Hayes has insisted he is happy to carry the burden of scoring Scunthorpe's goals while Gary Hooper recovers from injury.

Hayes has been handed the task of scoring United's goals as Hooper continues his battle to overcome a hamstring problem.
That is likely to be the case again on Saturday with Hooper set to be sidelined, but Hayes is happy for things to continue as they are after netting his third goal of the season in the 2-0 Carling Cup win over Port Vale on Tuesday.
"Our main top scorer Gary Hooper being out means I have to try and take on the responsibility of scoring the goals for the team," admitted Hayes to the Telegraph.
"That is why you get put in the team as a striker, to score goals. You can talk about creating and working hard but at the end of the day your job is to score goals.
"I haven't scored many of late but I am pleased to get the goal against Port Vale and I have got to crack on and concentrate on scoring others.
"Sometimes they are the best goals, when you don't know much about them and they hit you and go in.
"It's always the case - we have had 42 shots on goal against Port Vale and to not score the first goal until after 90 minutes is disappointing but it just shows maybe we need to get back on the pitch and do some shooting practice."
