Mirfin targets consistency
Scunthorpe United, 15:33, September 22, 2009 ,
Iron centre-half David Mirfin believes a solid defence could be the key ingredient for success at Glandford Park this season.
Scunthorpe boss Nigel Adkins has named the same back four for the last three matches after an injury hit start to the campaign and Mirfin believes a solid defence could be vital to the Iron's hopes of Championship survival.
Mirfrin, Jordan Spence, Rob Jones and Marcus Williams have all started the last three games, in which two goals were conceded, with Mirfin confident Scunthorpe can only get stronger with consistency at the back.
"I think that gaffer touched on it all through pre-season and early on in the season that he hasn't had a chance to work with a stable back four, and I think it's shown in the last three games that if you get a chance to work as a unit it shows in games." Mirfin told the club's official website.
"We've got people like Cliff Byrne chomping at the bit to get back into the team and that means you have to perform.
"I think if you look at any successful team in any league they have a solid back four or five and we've got that now and, touch wood, we can keep performing well and stay fit."
