Pirlo backs Del Piero stance
Juve star Andrea Pirlo says he agrees with Alessandro Del Piero's opposition to the club's plans to retire his number 10 jersey.
Legendary striker Del Piero retired from professional football at the end of the season, having ended his career with Serie A title success and an unbeaten league campaign with his beloved Juventus.
The club are now understood to be keen to retire the 37-year-old's number 10 jersey as a tribute to his efforts and accomplishments during a decorated 18-year career.
But Del Piero has expressed his reservations, stating instead his hope that one day another player may surpass his achievements.
And team-mate Pirlo has today added his voice to the debate.
"I agree with the opinion of Alex. It is right that the number 10 jersey is not retired," he said.
"Young champions should be given the chance to dream about wearing that number."
Although Pirlo was quick to play down the prospect of taking the number 10 jersey himself next season.
"I'll keep the number 21!" he joked.
