Laws facing striking headache

Sheffield Wednesday, 15:09, August 27, 2009 ,

Leon Clarke, Akpo Sodje and Francis Jeffers all look set to miss Wednesday's Championship fixture with Plymouth on Saturday.

Jeffers has been suspended and transfer listed by the Owls after the former Arsenal and Everton man appeared to headbutt and punch Port Vale's Tommy Fraser when the two sides met in the Carling Cup. It is thought Jeffers will not play for the South Yorkshire side again and will certainly not feature against the Pilgrims at the weekend.
Clarke and Sodje had been expected to return for Wednesday this week but boss Brian Laws has now admitted that neither player is likely to feature against the Pilgrims on Saturday.
"We're under a bit more pressure, striker wise, but we're used to that anyway and there is no reason why we cannot put in a good performance on Saturday," explained Laws. "Akpo is not match fit - I didn't really want to use him for the whole of the second half at Port Vale - and it's a bit too early for Leon.
"But once we have got through this game, we have a fortnight's break from the League and we'll have players fitter for when we get back into it after that."
However, Luke Varney could join Marcus Tudgay up front for the clash with Argyle, who are managed by former Wednesday boss Paul Sturrock, after he missed the clash with Port Vale due to being cup-tied.
