Hendry fights back to take Williams' scalp
Snooker, 10:51, April 20, 2009 ,
Stephen Hendry admitted he thought he would lose to Mark Williams before coming back to beat the Welshman 10-7 at the Crucible.
The seven-time champion trailed the 2000 and 2003 champion 5-4 and 7-5, before reeling off five successive frames to move into round two.
Williams was hampered by a damaged tip and the players agreed to take the interval early so he could carry out some running repairs.
But it did him no good as the 40-year-old Scot rolled back the years with breaks of 51, 83 and 53 to set up a clash with either Liang Wenbo or Ding Junhui in the next round.
Hendry admitted that his confidence was low going into the latter stages of the match and he had to draw on all his experience to come through the contest.
"To be 5-4 down last night I was devastated," he said. "Tonight I came out and I didn't feel confident, I didn't truly believe I could win.
"But something is inside me that doesn't allow myself to give up and it just came to the fore, I just kept plugging away.
"Mark had cue trouble throughout the match and that obviously had something to do with the shots he was playing."
