Southampton boss Nigel Adkins praised new signings Paulo Gazzaniga and Nathaniel Clyne after they featured in the 1-0 win over Evian.

Jason Puncheon's goal gave Saints the narrow pre-season victory against the French outfit as Adkins' side picked up a second-successive win this week. The Southampton boss was pleased with the result and with the progress his squad continue to make over the summer, while he was happy recent signings Gazzaniga and Clyne made their non-competitive debuts. "It's a victory, but it's not about the victories at the moment - it's about the progression," he told Saints Player. "We are three weeks into pre-season now and the lads' level of fitness are up. "It was a good game for us. Punch scored a good goal and could have had another one when he hit the crossbar, while Jay Rodriguez has had a header where the keeper has had to make a great save." On the new-boys, he reflected on Gazzaniga's clean sheet while he is excited at the future for Clyne after his move from Crystal Palace last week. "Paulo Gazzaniga kept a clean sheet and looked very assured," added the boss. "Nathan Clyne has come on, and what an exciting prospect he is - so we are delighted about that. Nathan has only had one day of pre-season so just to get him 20 minutes on the pitch was good."
