Defender bid fails
Southampton, 19:08, September 2, 2008 ,
Southampton failed with a late bid to sign Walsall defender Anthony Gerrard after failing to match their valuation.
Saints along with Birmingham and Coventry have been tracking the talented 22-year-old but Jan Poortvliet was the only manager to make a firm offer.
However, Walsall rejected the bid as it was not enough to convince them to sell.
Walsall boss Jimmy Mullen said: "Anthony is our player. If he plays with same level of commitment and desire that he has shown throughout his time at Walsall Football Club, then he will continue to be a very valuable member of our squad."
