Jan blocks defender move
Southampton, 15:07, September 3, 2008 ,
Southampton have refused to let defender Olly Lancashire leave on deadline day and told the player to fight for his place.
The 19-year-old, who is now Saints' reserve-team captain, had the chance to go out on loan but coach Jan Poortvliet told him to stay and fight for his place at St Mary's.
"I was going to go out on loan to Leyton Orient in League One, but the manager wanted me to stay and try to push for a starting place here, which is promising," he said.
"So I am working hard on the training field to try to do that. I am 19 now and have been playing for the reserves for about three years, so it would have been nice to get some first-team experience.
"But the gaffer has been positive and I am just going to come in and work hard and try to get into the first team."
