Napoli snubbed in Saints' target bid
Southampton's hopes of signing Brazilian international Leandro Damiao have been boosted after Napoli had a £15.5million bid rejected.
It seemed that Damiao would be plying his trade in Italy's Serie A next term when Rafael Benitez's side moved to the head of the queue for his signature.
Internacional have always stressed that they want to keep the player, who has also been linked with a move to Tottenham, and sporting director Luis Cesar Souto confirmed it would take more than Napoli's offer before they relent.
"We had a verbal offer presented by Napoli of 18million euros," Souto said. "We do not accept that this is Leandro's true value. What Napoli have offered is very far from what we expected the bid to be."
The Saints could now make a counter bid to persuade Internacional to allow Damiao to join them while Spurs seem to have gone cold on trying to sign him as they are now looking to entice Aston Villa's want-away striker Christian Benteke to move to White Hart Lane.
