Andy Crosby said Jay Rodriguez was one of a few to boost their first-team chances in the Capital One Cup win over Sheffield Wednesday.
Saints made nine changes to the side that on Saturday won their first Premier League game of the season against Aston Villa, with Rickie Lambert, Gaston Ramirez and Nathaniel Clyne amongst those watching from the stands. It allowed several squad players a run-out and they grasped their opportunity with both hands, especially £6million summer signing Rodriguez. The 23-year-old was played in his preferred role as central striker and shone in a much-changed Saints side, scoring his first goals for the club in their 2-0 defeat of Wednesday. "He had a massive impact," Crosby said. "I thought his movement was excellent against two centre-halves that perhaps wanted him to come short. "I thought his movement in between and down the side of them was really good. He is one of many players who have taken their opportunity."
