Michael Timlin misses out as Southend travel to Northampton still searching for their first point and first goal of the season.
Midfielder Timlin was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence in the first half of Tuesday's 2-0 defeat at Oxford and now serves a one-match suspension.
Manager Paul Sturrock made four changes in midweek, dropping influential winger Ryan Hall, captain Chris Barker, left-back Luke Prosser and forward Britt Assombalonga to the bench.
And the Scot now faces a dilemma as he looks to arrest the club's worst start to a season in 20 years.
Winger Kevan Hurst is struggling with an ankle injury, striker Freddy Eastwood (calf) has resumed training but is not yet ready while fellow frontman Barry Corr (groin) remains sidelined.
Goalkeeper Paul Smith is yet to make his debut having been named on the bench at Oxford following his arrival.
