Italian star confirms approach

Sunderland, 14:29, May 31, 2009 ,

Roberto Mancini claims he has been approached by Sunderland to become the next manager at the Stadium of Light.

The former Lazio and Inter Milan chief has been strongly linked with a position in the Premier League since revealing his desire earlier this month to manage in England.
Mancini has been out of the game since leaving his post at the San Siro in May 2008, after winning the Serie A title on three occasions and lifting the Italian Cup twice.
Speaking to Sky Italia, Mancini revealed: "I am very happy and at the same time honoured to have received an offer from Sunderland.
"It would be truly wonderful to lead such a prestigious and historic club in England. After a year of sitting on the sidelines, I feel ready to start again with immense enthusiasm."
Mancini, though, appears to be one of a few options for Sunderland, who look to have drawn up a shortlist of targets, including Steve Bruce, before making a final decision.
The 44-year-old Mancini has experience of English football after finishing his player career with a short stint at Leicester City back in 2001.
