Djibril Cisse is to leave Sunderland after the Black Cats confirmed they do not want to sign the Marseille striker on a permanent deal.
The 27-year-old Frenchman spent the whole season on loan at the Stadium of Light but it became clear in recent weeks that he would not be staying beyond the summer.
The former Liverpool striker, who did manage a creditable 10 league goals this season, will now initially head back to Marseille before assessing his options.
Chairman Niall Quinn revealed the news Cisse was on his way as he told the club's website: "We wish Djibril well and thank him for his contribution to the club this season."
Several Premier League clubs, including Spurs and Aston Villa, have been linked with Cisse in the past and could look to sign him over the summer.
