Sunderland look at free agent
Martin O'Neill's side have been linked with former Liverpool and Manchester United striker Michael Owen, who is a free agent.
Sunderland have joined the race to sign out of contract Owen, who was released by Manchester United at the end of last season. The 32-year-old is allowed to carry out negotiations outside of the transfer window and has stated his desire to stay in the Premier League after tweeting he has turned down offers from two major European clubs. Owen struggled to become a regular in the United first team during his three years at the club, making 31 appearances. O'Neill has already brought in Louis Saha and Steven Fletcher to strengthen his side in attack but Owen could also be drafted in as a back-up.
