Sunderland stall on defender move

Sunderland's expected offer for Aston Villa's out of contract defender Carlos Cuellar has not yet materialized and they may miss out.

Black Cats boss Martin O'Neill was expected to make the 30-year-old one of his first summer signings as his contract came to an end at Villa Park but no move has materialised. There have been offers from abroad and Spanish clubs Valencia and Osasuna are interested along with the likes of Galatasaray and Olympiakos. But Cuellar's agent, Pedro Bravo, said: "Sunderland have not made an offer for Carlos. They have not phoned me."
