Tsonga too hot for Monfils
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga eased through to the second round of the Rakuten Japan Open with a straight-sets victory over Gael Monfils.
The Frenchman is seeded second for the event but faced a tricky opener against his compatriot in the Far East.
But, in a match of just one break of serve and 19 aces, the 2008 Australian Open finalist prevailed 6-3 7-6 (10-8) in 91 minutes and will next play the winner of the Ivan Dodig - Yuichi Sugita clash.
Elsewhere at the event, Spanish sixth seed Nicolas Almagro beat German qualifier Benjamin Becker in straight sets in a tight match that needed two tie-breakers, while Daniel Brands could not handle Alexander Dolgopolov and went down 6-3 6-1, with Janko Tipsarevic or Victor Hanescu now waiting for the Ukrainian.
Jarkko Nieminen was another winner on the opening day with a straight-sets triumph over Juan Monaco.
The first set was close but the Finn romped away with the second for a 7-6 (7/4) 6-1 success and a date with either Marcel Granollers or Gilles Simon.
