Agassi wants "compassion"

Tennis, 12:42, November 6, 2009

Andre Agassi has asked for "compassion" for taking crystal meth back in 1997 in a TV interview due to be broadcast on Sunday.

The 39-year-old made the revelations about his drug use in a recently-published autobiography, saying that he lied to ATP officials to escape a ban back in 1997.
The Las Vegas-based star slumped to 141st in the world during that year and the signs were there that the former world number one was having problems.
But nobody was prepared for the admission that he used recreational drugs and the response has been mixed from players and fans.
While condemning the use of drugs, current stars such as Andy Murray say that their opinion of the eight-time Grand Slam winner have not changed, as he has been an inspiration to many young players over the years.
And now Agassi has given his first interview about the scandal, which will be broadcast in the US on Sunday.
Clips have been leaked to the media and Agassi is heard to plead for compassion during the discussion.
"I would hope with that would come some compassion that maybe this person doesn't need condemnation," he said. "Maybe this person could stand a little help because that was at a time in my life when I needed help.
"I had a problem and there might be many other athletes out there that test positive for recreational drugs that have a problem. So I would ask for some compassion."
