British pair Elena Baltacha and Melanie South have crashed out of the final round of qualifying for the US Open in New York on Friday.
British number two Baltacha had looked on course to make it through to the main draw at Flushing Meadows for the first time earlier in the week when she saw off Poland's Anna Korzeniak 7-6 (7-5) 5-7 6-0.
However France's Julie Coin edged a closely-fought encounter 7-5 2-6 7-6 (7-4).
British number three, South, who beat Italy's Alberta Brianti 6-2 3-6 6-3 in her first qualifying round, was defeated 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 by China's Zhang Shuai.
As a result of their departures from the event, British hopes in the main draw of the US Open rest on number one Andy Murray and world number 86, Anne Keothavong.
