Roger Federer's disappointing season took another dive as his Olympic dream was ended by James Blake.
The American had been unsuccessful against the soon-to-be-deposed world number one in eight previous matches but outplayed the Swiss ace to claim a 6-4 7-6 quarter-final win.
The crowd was stunned as Blake broke in the 10th game before going on to take the first set and then showed nerves of steel to take the second set after a tie-break.
Federer, who will be replaced at the top of the world rankings by Rafael Nadal next Monday, was guilty of a number of unforced errors and now knows he will have to step up his game if he is to have any chance of defending his US Open title this month.
Blake was understandably delighted with his win after just a solitary set success against Federer in their previous showdowns.
"I always believed in myself," he said. "I'd lost to him eight, nine, 10, 50 times, I don't know how many, but I had the feeling it could be my day.
"He didn't play a good first game and that put me up straight away. I played loose and free and I always fancy my chances on the 5-4 game.
"I know I can beat the best in the world on my day and I proved it."
