Federer makes quick progress

Tennis, 10:22, August 27, 2008

Four-time defending champion Roger Federer blew away his first-round opponent Maximo Gonzalez in just 82 minutes.

The Swiss maestro wasted little time in seeing off the Argentine to progress to the next round, winning in straight sets 6-3 6-0 6-3, where he will face Brazil's Thiago Alves.
The 27-year-old won this title last year to make it 12 Grand Slam titles in all, but has had an awful year by his standards, losing his Australian Open and Wimbledon titles as well as his world number one ranking to Rafel Nadal.
Federer was pleased with his form after dispatching the world number 118 and said: "This take a little bit of pressure off me because I know a little more about where my game is at. I have to play more aggressively on hardcourt."
His task of retaining his title has been made easier as well after 12th seed Richard Gasquet, who is in his quarter of the draw, was knocked out by German Tommy Haas, 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 5-7 7-5 6-2.
