Jankovic bemoans poor form

Tennis, 12:51, August 2, 2008

Jelena Jankovic admitted her form is not good enough after defeat to Dominika Cibulkova cost her the chance to become world number one.

The Serb looked on course to replace current top seed Ana Ivanovic, who crashed out of the Rogers Cup on Thursday, when she romped into a 5-1 lead in the first set of her last-eight tie. However 19-year-old Slovakian, Cibulkova, stormed back to win the encounter 7-5 6-2 to progress into the semi-finals, where she will face France's Marion Bartoli, who defeated Japan's Ai Sugiyama 6-2, 6-3.
Afterwards Jankovic said: "At the moment I don't deserve the top spot. I am not in the best shape, I am not at my highest level.
"So it will take time for me to get better. The number one spot doesn't matter. I want to be healthy, I want to improve, I want to play tennis. I don't really think about number one or whatever happens. If it's going to happen, it will happen."
On the defeat to Cibulkova she added: "I was hitting the ball well but then I just got exhausted, completely lost my concentration.
"The longer the play went, I felt worse and worse."
The other last-four tie will involve seventh-seed Dinara Safina of Russia, who defeated fourth seed fellow compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova 2-6 6-3 6-2, and Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, who saw off Austria's Tamira Paszec 6-4 7-5.
