British number one Anne Keothavong's US Open dream is over after she was knocked out by Olympic champion Elena Dementieva.
The 24-year-old caused an upset in the second round on her first trip to Flushing Meadows by dispatching 25th seed Francesca Schiavone but lightning did not strike twice after she was beaten in straight sets, 6-3 6-4, by the Russian fifth seed.
The world number 87, who is set to become the first British woman since 1999 to break into the top 70, can leave with her head held high, having pushed Dementieva all the way.
The Londoner suffered an immediate setback, losing her first service game but hit back with a break of her own, only to surrender the initiative straight away.
And the big-hitting Dementieva sealed the first set with another break as she dominated from the baseline.
However, Keothavong gave herself a chance with a break to go 4-3 up in the second but her joy was short-lived as Dementieva reeled off three straight games to seal the match.
The Briton, who converted only three of ten break points, was a little deflated after the match as she failed to take her chances.
"I'm obviously disappointed. I felt I had opportunities, and I hit too many errors on routine shots," she said. "I just feel like I could have done a better job."
