Svetlana Kuznetsova has become another major casualty at the US Open after being dumped out by Katarina Srebotnik.
The third seed won the title back in 2004 and finished runner-up last year but has now followed top seed Ana Ivanovic on an early flight home, losing to her Slovenian opponent 3-6 7-6 (7-1) 3-6.
Kuznetsova found Srebotnik's aggression too hot to handle for much of the contest, but got herself back into the game with a commanding tie-break to force the decider.
However, she was broken early in the third set and Srebotnik maintained her tempo to complete a famous win.
"I didn't play badly," said Kuznetsova. "She just played her best game.
"I was fighting and I wanted so much to win that match. She served very well, she came to the net many times, she was more aggressive than I was.
"For me it's a special tournament, I wanted to play very well here.
"She started coming in and I was not able to keep her back or come in myself."
Second seed Jelena Jankovic did at least make it to the next round but she was given a thorough examination before eventually overcoming Zheng Jie 7-5 7-5.
