Andy Murray believes he can defy the doubters and win gold at the Beijing Olympics before going on to win the US Open afterwards.
Many observers, including Murray's mum and former coach Judy, feel it will be difficult for the winner of the Olympics to then be successful at Flushing Meadows as there is just eight days between the Olympic final and the start of the last grand slam of the year.
But Murray, responding to questions from reporters over his mother's comments that 'anybody who does well at the Olympics is unlikely to do well at the US Open', said: "I think she is wrong!
"It makes it harder if you do well here but between the final of the Olympics and the US Open final is three weeks and you are going to have at least two weeks off in that time because you obviously play every second day in the slams.
"I think if you do all the right things in between the tournaments you can do well in both."
Murray added: "To be involved is awesome and you also want to play well. As long as I play well I won't have too many complaints. I've had good preparation coming in so there is no reason why I can't be successful.
"Sometimes in tennis you can play a great match and lose if someone plays better than you. I've played really well the last few months and if I can keep that up I'm sure I can win through a few rounds and once you get to the quarter-finals anything can happen."
Murray faces Chinese Taipei's Lu Yen-Hsun, ranked world number 74, in the first round in the Olympic tennis tournament.
