Rafael Nadal set his sights on his third major in a row after landing Olympic gold to become the new men's world number one.
The Spanish superstar beat Chile's Fernando Gonzalez 6-3 7-6 6-3 to replace Roger Federer at the top of the latest ATP rankings and claim his eighth title of 2008.
"I'm very happy but the feeling doesn't change much because the last years I did well too," said the 22-year-old.
Nadal, who had been world number two since July 2005, immediately turned his attention to the US Open, which starts on August 25, and a possible third clash against Federer, who he has already beaten this year in the French Open and Wimbledon.
"For sure there's satisfaction, but at the same time I don't have time to celebrate. I play New York in one week," added Nadal.
