Andy Roddick was defeated in Los Angeles as Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro secured his third consecutive tournament victory.
The former world number one, who snubbed a place on America's Olympic team in order to stay at home and prepare for the US Open later this month, has been struggling with a back problem and required treatment on it during the first set.
However Roddick refused to use that as an excuse as 6ft 6in 19-year-old Del Potro followed up his back-to-back clay titles in Stuttgart and Kitzbuhel last month to ease to a 6-1 7-6 (7-2) victory on the LA hard courts.
Del Potro, who is set to climb the rankings again after jumping up to a career-high 24 recently, said: "I played a very good week and today I played unbelievable.
"I don't think Roddick was 100% but I played unbelievable to win. I beat (Tommy) Robredo last year but to beat Roddick in the United States, I think is the best win of my career."
Roddick said: "I could have played really well but I am not sure it would have mattered. I missed a few returns but other than that I was okay."
