Sharapova forced out of Beijing

Tennis, 11:33, August 1, 2008

Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova has been forced to withdraw from the Beijing Olympics because of a shoulder injury.

The problem forced the 21-year-old star out of the WTA Rogers Open in Montreal, where she was in visible pain in her second-round victory over Marta Domachowska and an MRI scan revealed two small tears.
Sharapova is now even a doubt for the US Open on August 25 and admitted that the injury might require a lot of time to heal.
"This is something that needs a lot of time to heal. It really hurts me to say I have to miss the Olympics," Sharapova told her official website.
"After Wednesday's match I knew there was something seriously wrong with my shoulder.
"After taking a few different exams and MRI's, the doctors found two small tears in the tendons of my shoulder.
"There are so many mixed feelings because on Wednesday night they were almost positive there was something wrong with my nerve, which could have ultimately been much more serious."
"The timing is so unfortunate and this makes me more sad than anything."
