I will be too old for England - Redknapp

Tottenham Hotspur, 09:02, September 10, 2010 , | No Comments

Harry Redknapp has admitted he would not turn down the England job but feels he 'will be too old' when Fabio Capello retires in 2012.

The Tottenham boss has emerged as the favourite to replace the 64-year-old Italian tactician when he steps down following the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine in two years' time. And, while Redknapp is well aware that whoever takes on the job will 'get slaughtered', he insists that it is the 'pinnacle' of a manager's career.
However the former West Ham and Portsmouth boss feels, at 63, he will be too old to step into Capello's shoes given that he is only a year younger.
Redknapp said: "No, but I don't want to start saying 'I want the England job'.
"It's not something that I push myself for. I will probably be too old. If Capello is too old, I will be too old."
He added: "People will always take it because, if you're English, it's the pinnacle of your career if you're in management.
"You've got to take the job if you get offered it. (But) whoever takes it gets absolutely slaughtered.
"Probably the only person who has escaped it has been Terry Venables in Euro 96.
"But, since then, everybody's had it, haven't they? Probably even the great Bobby Robson.
"He got slaughtered at one stage - made his life a misery."
