Trio battle for Spurs star

Tottenham Hotspur, 12:14, July 28, 2008

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp now claims he is the outsider behind Aston Villa and Sunderland for Spurs defender Younes Kaboul.

Redknapp revealed over the weekend that he felt Pompey were in pole position to conclude a deal for the 22-year-old former France Under-21 captain.

The Pompey chief said: "Sunderland and Villa both made fantastic offers, but the lad decided he wanted to come to Portsmouth.

"Younes is a good, young player with bags of potential. He will be a great addition to the squad."

However, it now appears Redknapp has changed his mind because he has intimated that the deal is all but dead.

He told the News: "I still want to bring in Kaboul but he has spoken with Sunderland. I know Aston Villa also want him.

"I went to see him last year before he joined Spurs, and drank Moroccan tea with his parents. But Roy Keane has met with him now, too.

"I'd say we are third now behind the other two teams."
