Jonathan Woodgate has urged manager Harry Redknapp to buy Tottenham out of a Premier League relegation scrap.
Redknapp has guided Spurs away from the top-flight trapdoor since his arrival from Portsmouth but a poor return from recent fixtures has left the north Londoners still in danger from a fall.
Redknapp has confirmed he wants to sign a proven goalscorer and left-sided midfielder and Woodgate believes it is vital he is given the necessary backing.
"Of course it is," Woodgate told the Evening Standard when asked if it is important the club sign fresh faces. "We are in a relegation battle and we have to keep improving. Every team have to buy players.
"If you look at this time last season, Spurs signed players and we must keep on buying.
"We need as many top-quality players as we can get. Stewart Downing is a Middlesbrough player, so I can't say much about his future. But he is an England international and anyone who plays for England is a good player."
